Fishing Conditions & News

the month ahead

It’s the end of the year again and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our regular and new visiting anglers to our fishery for their support throughout 2011.

Christmas Competition 2011.

This year it was again a sell out. Every angler enjoying cracking sport throughout the day. This years winner was Lewis Janes with a bag of 28lb 9oz; 2nd Wayne Thomas 26lb 11oz; 3rd Les Cleavley 26lb. Some of the bags included some superb brownies up to 6lb. This annual event has been running now for over 20 years and is one of the highlights of our fishing year.

Best Fish 2011.

As at 22/12/11 the largest fish to be netted this year is a cracking rainbow weighing 20lb 8oz caught by Les Cleavley. You have 9 days left to better this fish ! Best brown to date was a fish weighing 9lb to one of our regulars. Fish quality this year has again been FIRST class and we intend to keep it that way ! The average size for rainbows throughout 2011 is 3lb 8oz, browns 3lb 4oz. It’s been a good year for doubles with many rainbows from 10 – 20lb having been caught and we currently have some very large browns up to 18lb waiting to be caught !

Food for thought.

Several of our regular fly fishermen have, over the years, suggested that perhaps we could form a FRIENDS OF BLAKEWELL FLY FISHING CLUB. The objective would be for anglers to have a home water, where they could meet, chat and enjoy friendly fishing events – with the emphasis on the word friendly. We would welcome any thoughts or comments on this idea, please give us a call or email. Tel 01271 344533 or mail@blakewell.co.uk

2012 Fishing Charges.

Currently we have no plans to increase our charges in 2012.

2011 Review.

After the mini ice age the fishing really got going and January provided superb sport for our winter fishermen. As the year progressed it became very clear we were going to struggle with water flows, with no rain for almost 6 months. However, careful management and hard work by our team ensured continued quality fish and fishing. Fly hatches were very good and provided some of the best evening fishing in the West country. The weed did arrive in early August. It can provide tricky surface conditions but the actual fishing was quite superb if you employed a little more casting skill than normal. We are currently treating the algae with a new ultra sonic installation to combat this annual problem that affects all fishing waters. The autumn /winter this year has been excellent, high flows and good temperatures resulting in very good fishing returns. Prospects for the new year are looking very positive, with more browns and some very nice blues being released into the fishery.

We again thank everyone for their continued support and we wish you all TIGHT LINES throughout 2012.
A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

From Richard & John and everyone at Blakewell
